"Believe in the power of the

Blueberry Muffin Tops!"

— Holly

Nerd Chow, anyone?

After PAX East Day 1, had to come Day 2.

There are a few people at the PAX convention this weekend that have risen to the top of the ranks, in our estimation. In this fast-paced, highly-technical, super-intimidating world of video games, they are the trend-setters and arbiters of this particular brand of “cool”. A few these people make up a band of lunatics called Joystiq. These are the gentlemen who write the gaming blog joystiq.com and host a hugely popular podcast. And one of these lunatics in particular, Justin McElroy, happens to love Blueberry Muffin Tops Cereal so much that he has made it famous among the video-gaming set. So, as far as we’re concerned, Justin McElroy can do no wrong.

Here is an interview with McElroy, which we taped on Friday.

This brings us nicely to the most awesome event of the weekend. The event that all of these hard-to-impress gamers will be talking about forever, the event that will have them shouting from the rooftops, “Blueberry Muffin Tops cereal is an American original!”, the event that brought The BBMT Street Team to Boston in the first place! The Joystiq / Blueberry Muffin Tops Breakfast..

Because we had limited supplies (600 bowls of BBMT and 60,000 gamers), attendees had to first obtain a special wrist band from Alexander Sliwinski, of Joystiq fame. Joystiq posted instructions on their website, and Alexander distributed the wristbands outside the convention center. It was sooo cold, and sooo early, but these dedicated gamers trooped on in anyway, with hangovers and very few hours of sleep. That’s commitment.

After obtaining a wristband, the attendees waited in a line outside the hall where the breakfast was to be held. The excitement was palpable!

And finally, it was time to let them all in!

Everyone got settled in, and our own MP Godfrey delivered a quick welcome speech and introduced Justin McElroy. Man, that dude is so funny!

Disney was also there to preview their new game, “Split/Second” so we also heard a few words of welcome from Paul [LASTNAME?]

Then it was time to get our Blueberry Muffin Tops on.

Okay, here’s an interesting item. During his keynote address, Wil Wheaton mentioned “Nerd chow.” None of us knew what that meant, probably because we’re not nerds.

(ahem.)

Anyway, we turned to a cute guy who might have been a nerd, and we asked him what Nerd Chow was. He explained that it’s not something specific, it’s just junk food that you don’t have to cook, and is readily available. And we turned to each other and squealed, “Like Blueberry Muffin Tops!” And that cute guy who answered our question shrugged and walked away. Thanks, guy!

So, back to the story: Everyone loved our nerd chow at the Blueberry Muffin Tops breakfast, and we had so much fun! There were tons of people there who had never tried BBMT before, and are now converted!

After eating, participants had a chance to preview Split/Second and rock out to Rock Band 2. The party atmosphere was vibrant and exciting, even for 9 AM, which was pretty early when you realize that some of the PAX events didn’t even start until 11:30 PM the evening before.

One Problem with Boston

There were two handsome fellows from the Boston area at this breakfast who weren’t BBMT virgins, but almost. (Important note: for some awful reason, Blueberry Muffin Tops Cereal is impossible to find in Boston. No, not just difficult to find – impossible to find! Bostonians, call your congressmen and women!) The night before, these nice guys were chatting with Justin McElroy and told him that they had never eaten BBMT before. Lucky for them, Justin McElroy always travels with a personal stash, so he invited them up to his hotel room for a private sampling. (This is one of those things that sounds much weirder than it was. Come to think of it, there are a lot of things at video game conventions that sound a lot weirder than they actually are. Okay, wait, maybe it was weird.) Anyway, apparently these guys liked taste of Justin’s sweet stuff, because they were back for more the very next morning.

Thanks to everyone who came to our breakfast. It was so nice to meet you. Please keep up with us on Twitter and Facebook!
